Playing a hybrid role in the localization team, the Localization Engineer is pivotal to maintaining and improving the technological foundations on which localization operations are built and helping management to demonstrate the effectiveness of l10n operations.

They focus on managing the localization tech stack, gathering & analyzing data related to localization operations, and serving as point of contact and driver for the team’s custom development efforts. As such, they are essential to ensuring the continuity of localization operations, ensuring minimal disruption, and removing roadblocks as they arise – whether for individual team members, at the workflow level, or at the program level.

Responsibilities

Localization Technology & Processes

  • Serve as the point of contact for liaising with software providers, e.g. for purposes of support, procurement, or maintenance
  • Work with their manager to …
    • assess the impact of other teams’ tools, content, and workflows as it relate to localization operations
    • develop new approaches for processing new types of content for localization
    • improve existing workflows and processes
    • scope potential additions for or replacements in the localization tech stack
  • Assist localization team members with questions or technical issues relating to localization systems and processes
  • Create & maintain documentation and training materials for all aspects of localization systems and processes
  • Develop and deliver high-quality onboarding and training sessions for all aspects of localization systems and processes
  • Develop, guide, and maintain machine translation operations in the localization team
    • Serve as the driver for major machine translation use cases like support documentation
  • Responsible for maintaining the linguistic assets of the localization team. This includes driving continued translation memory management processes across all languages serviced by the localization team

Data Analysis

  • Serve as the main point of contact for any inquiries relating to the localization team’s reporting infrastructure and underlying data sources
  • Become certified (following HubSpot’s internal procedures) for using all major tools relating to the localization reporting infrastructure (Looker, Workato, dbt, Snowflake)
  • Develop appropriate proficiency in the use of all major tools relating to the localization reporting infrastructure (Looker, Workato, dbt, Snowflake)
  • Assist localization management and team members with developing new or extended reporting
  • Develop working relationships with product analysts from related teams/departments (such as international operations)
  • Develop a working knowledge of and familiarity with the reporting data from select teams/departments (e.g. Marketing, Sales)

Product Management

  • Serve as point of contact for liaising with internal development resources assigned to localization initiatives
  • Work with their manager to …
    • field ideas & requests for custom development initiatives in support of localization operations
    • develop ideas for custom development initiatives in support of localization operations
    • create project briefs for custom development initiatives in support of localization operations
  • Perform quality assurance and bug testing, including reporting & triage, for custom development initiatives in support of localization operations
  • Create documentation for completed custom development initiatives in support of localization operations

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of professional experience in localization
  • 3+ years of experience implementing and using TMS, CAT & TM tools (MemoQ, Transifex, LocalizeJS)
  • 3+ years of experience working with CMS tools and L10N functionality
  • Solid knowledge of project management software (JIRA, Asana)
  • Working knowledge of the foundations of web-based applications / applications with dedicated online functionality
  • Familiarity with product design principles & software development processes
  • Experience with QA processes, bug reporting & triage workflows
  • (Optional) Baseline programming experience, ideally including HTML, CSS, Javascript / Typescript, Java
  • (Optional) Experience working with iPaaS systems
  • (Optional) Experience with data analysis & visualization, as well as the associated tools
  • (Optional) Familiarity with common publishing and editing software tools used for L10N (InDesign, Photoshop, Office Suite, etc.)
